SAGE Recycles Used Cell Phones To Help Local Seniors in Need
Local residents can drop off used cell phones and other electronics at SAGE Eldercare in Summit, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., as a part of their new fundraising program.
SAGE Eldercare has joined forces with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) in a new fundraising program which will benefit seniors – the collection of used cell phones and other electronics.
The program will help contribute to support SAGE Eldercare’s programs and services, such as providing meals on wheels, care giving support, health promotion activities, and life-long learning, as well as help the environment.
“We’re really excited to participate in this program since we’re not only reducing dangerous chemicals in our landfills, we’re also using the proceeds towards helping senior citizens in our area,” says Dawn Knill, Director of Development. “Most people don’t know what to do with old phones and electronics, so this is an easy way to dispose of these items and ensure that the proceeds go to a good cause.”
SAGE is collecting the devices at 290 Broad Street in Summit during regular business hours, Monday — Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are accepting cell phones (without chargers and cords), laptops (no desktop monitors or towers, please), cameras, mp3 players, and video game consoles. For more information on the program, contact SAGE at (908) 598-5503.
SAGE Eldercare supports the independence, well-being and quality of life of older adults, their families and caregivers, through the provision of client-centered health, social and support services.
Founded in 1954, SAGE is both the oldest and one of the few non-profit eldercare agencies in the United States that offers a broad and comprehensive array of services under one roof that assist elderly, often frail, adults to remain independent in their own homes.
SAGE Eldercare programs include: HomeCare; Meals on Wheels; Spend-A-Day Adult Day Care Center; GPS; InfoCare free information and referral service; Fall Prevention Initiative; Home Repair Service; Grocery Shopping and Errand Service; Bill Paying Service; Alzheimer’s and PREP caregiver support groups; and SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). SAGE Eldercare serves over 5,000 older people and their families annually in Union, Essex, Morris and Somerset counties. For more information, call (908) 273-5550 or visit www.sageeldercare.org.

Does it matter who the service provider is on the cell phone? I have a couple of Senior Value Cellphones that my mom used to use that I think seniors could benefit from. I switched her over to the android phones on TracFone because she wanted something more stylish. There is still use in these phones if they'll take SVC phones.
