How Important is the College Interview?

Students (and sometimes, parents) often ask about the importance of the college interview. Just how important is the interview? Do schools still conduct interviews? How can I prevent myself from saying something stupid?

Good questions, all. And here are a few brief suggestions regarding the college interview process. It’s true that some schools don’t offer prospective applicants the chance for a formal interview. But it’s a very good idea to try to make contact with schools you are considering. It gives you a chance to stand out from the crowd, and gives the admissions department a way to get to know you on a personal level.

To make the most of an interview, and to avoid saying something you might later regret, be prepared. There are three questions you should be able to answer at any college interview: Why do you think you’ll be a good fit here?...Have you read any good books lately?...And, What questions would you like to ask us?

Be sure you don’t ask any questions that are easily found on the college website. Instead, try asking something like: How does your college differ from _______[name of competitor school]; or, How would you describe the personality of your campus?

In closing, be sure to thank the admissions officer for their help and information and for taking the time to speak with you personally.
