Berkeley Heights Residents Reject BAC Referendum By More Than 2,000 Votes

Residents overwhelmingly voted against a referendum asking the township to allow the proposed Berkeley Aquatic Center to use the local sewer system.

Residents of Berkeley Heights have made their opinions loud and clear: they are opposed to allowing the proposed Berkeley Aquatic Center to connect to the township's sewer system. Voters went to the polls Tuesday, casting 2,744 ballots against allowing the proposed BAC to hook up to the municipal sewer system. According to the results from the Township Clerk's office, 661 residents cast votes in favor of the BAC referendum. The Berkeley Aquatic Club proposal calls for the construction of a 51,000-square-foot building in nearby Warren, just over the Berkeley Heights border. The facility plans involve the construction of an approximately 51,940-square-foot building on 523,591-square-feet of land. It includes a swimming pool facility …

The fact that Gov. Chris Christie didn’t win the New Jersey Education Association’s endorsement for governor this weekend wasn’t all that unexpected. The surprise was that he participated in the process at all. Four years after Christie sent a public letter rather than showing up for his pitch to the NJEA, the governor walked across West State St. in Trenton -- right on time for his 6:30 appointment. Bergen Sworn into Freeholder Board

On Sunday, Jan. 6, Bruce Bergen was sworn into the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders.  Bergen, a Springfield resident and a partner in the Cranford law firm of Krevsky, Silber & Bergen, has practiced law in Union County for 32 years.  A lifelong resident of Union County, he has been active in leadership and elected positions with the Union County Democratic Committee since 1979. Once again, Woodbridge is going to be the spotlight for Gov. Chris Christie. The Republican governor is going to hold his campaign kickoff fundraiser in Woodbridge next month. The event will be held at the Renaissance Woodbridge in the Iselin section of the township on Monday, February 4, at 6 pm. The announcement was made by the Christie for New Jersey campaign committee. Lesnewich, Kapner Discuss Their Next Steps on New Providence Council

While many were still without power this past Tuesday — and still are right now — it was a usual Election Day in New Providence. With three candidates and only two Council seats open in New Providence, incumbent Alan Lesnewich and newcomer Gary Kapner were voted in by the residents with 3,255 and 3,187 votes, respectively. Democrats Retain Control Of Freeholder Board

Once again, Democrats sweep freeholder race.

There were few surprises as the results were tallied in the race for three seats on the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, in which the Democratic party once again swept the GOP. Six candidates were competing for three openings on the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders including: Democrats Alexander Mirabella of Fanwood, who  currently serves as chairman of the Freeholder Board; Mohamed S. Jalloh, of Roselle who is finishing up his first term and Bruce H. Bergen of Springfield, who joined the Democratic ticket this year.
