St. Teresa of Avila Church, 306 Morris Avenue in Summit will begin its fifth year implementing their English as a Second Language (ESL) Program, located in St. Teresa of Avila school, adjacent to the church. The program will be offered this year in collaboration with Literacy Volunteers of Union County.
“By collaborating with Literacy Volunteers of Union County’s award-winning program, we are enhancing our volunteer training program and ESL classes,” said Esmeralda Vargas, representative of the Hispanic Ministry Leadership. “This new partnership will greatly benefit the participants in the Summit, Berkeley Heights and New Providence communities.”
ELS classes will be held every Thursday from 7:00PM to 8:45 PM., beginning September 12, 2013. The first session ends December 19, 2013. The second session begins with registration on January 9, 2014 and ends in May 2014. Pre-registration is required. The deadline for pre-registration is September 5th. The classes are free. There is a $15.00 registration fee.
St. Teresa’s ESL program has received a Special Recognition “Unity Award” from the Union County Human Relations Commission for its dedication and effort in offering diverse non-English speaking individuals with opportunities to learn English and improve their communication skills in their community, their place of employment and with their children’s school. They are empowered to learn about American history, culture and the way of life in their new home.
An English proficiency level placement test will be administered to each individual to ensure they are placed in the most appropriate English class level. The classes are taught by a group of trained community volunteers who generously donate their time and services to help improve language skills and the quality of life for an immigrant population.
There will be two level placement test dates: August 21 and August 28, 2013, 6:00PM to 8:30PM in St. Teresa’s school. Anyone interested in participating in the ESL classes is asked to call Literacy Volunteers of Union County at 908-486-1777 to schedule an appointment for the placement test.
