Faith Lutheran Church in New Providence and local organizations conduct fall food drive

Faith Lutheran Church in New Providence, Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops of New Providence and Berkeley Heights and the Community Service Association of New Providence are again teaming up to conduct a fall food drive for needy families.

On Saturday, November 16 and Sunday, November 17, Cub and Boy Scouts will distribute paper bags and flyers requesting canned and packed foods to 5,000 homes in New Providence and Berkeley Heights. On Saturday, November 23, the scouts will return to the homes to pick up the bags and then deliver the food-filled bags to Faith Lutheran Church.

If members of the community, who do not receive a bag, wish to bring food directly to Faith Lutheran, they may do so on any day through Friday, November 22. The address of Faith Lutheran is 524 South St., New Providence.

Throughout November 23, volunteers from Faith Lutheran, the Community Service Association, and other community groups will sort and pack the food into boxes for needy families. At the 2012 pack and sort day, food valued at $26,600 filled 535 boxes.

On Saturday, November 30, volunteers from Faith Lutheran will deliver the large majority of the boxes to StarFish Pantry, a combined Jewish/Christian organization in Plainfield. StarFish Pantry provides emergency aid to about 9,000 people in Greater Plainfield, two-thirds of whom are children. As the resources of the pantry are almost depleted, the new food will likely meet the needs of the Pantry throughout the winter and early spring.

Boxes of food will also be distributed to needy residents of New Providence and Berkeley Heights by the New Providence Community Service Association. These boxes will include pumpkin pies, baked by the home economics classes of New Providence High School.

For the 13th consecutive year, the coordinator of the Fall Food Drive is Cheryl Bock of Faith Lutheran Church and New Providence.
