New Providence Garden Club Celebrating 75th Anniversary
The New Providence Garden Club is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. It was established in 1939 by a group of women residents who all shared an interest in gardening. At that time, members met in each other’s homes and enjoyed discussing their gardens in a social atmosphere. Over the years, the garden club has held flower shows where the proceeds were donated within the New Providence community, created table decorations for the Red Cross Society’s gala, and provided flowers for patients in the Lyons Veterans Hospital. The club has decorated the Governor’s mansion for Christmas time. They are a member of the National Garden Club and the Garden Club of New Jersey and the New Jersey Audubon society.
They have planted the gardens at the Salt Box Museum in New Providence and maintain them yearly by summer waterings, and spring and fall clean ups. Their yearly fundraiser is held on the grounds at the spring Salt Box Fair. Recently, members donated and planted over 450 daffodils in Centennial Park and also collected monies for the Red Cross for Japanese earthquake victims. This fall members planted the flower boxes in front of the library and outside the NPHS Athletic Booster Club's Chuck Wagon. The club has also participated in the New Providence Street Fair.
Starting in 2005, monthly meetings were held at the New Providence Library, where they also supplied a floral arrangement for the library each month. In 2012, the meetings were moved to the DeCorso Center, formerly the Senior Citizens Center, where programs offering guest speakers or demonstrations are held. A list of programs can be found on their website npgardenclub.weebly.com and gardening information on their New Providence Garden Club Facebook page.
