Three charitable organizations received $1,000 checks during the 17th annual Berkeley Heights Charitable 5K Road Race and Fitness Walk.
The Wounded Warrior Project, VFW Post 6259 and Hope on the Horizon: An Expedition for ALS were awarded at the event, held Sunday at Memorial Field, according to the Alternative Press.
"The Berkeley Heights 5K is about neighbors helping neighbors," race director Patrick Smith said.
"Without the generous support of our corporate and local business patrons and the dedication of our volunteers, our charity event would not be possible, which is another example of how great this community is, good people willing to give both time and money to help one another."
Dean Debonis, 16, won the race with a time of 19:16:39. Jessica Braun won the women’s division with a 20:15:45 finish.
The Berkeley Heights Charity 5K Road Race and Fitness Walk was established in 1996 to help lend support to nonprofit organizations and individuals in need. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $140,000.
