The Caring Sharing Network provides vital information to seniors and caregivers throughout Union County. Left to right: Susan Devaney, Moving Mavins; Donna Occhipinti, Visiting Physician Services; Joy Kleinman, Beltone Hearing Care Centers; Lois Shanker, Right at Home; Nancy Rager, Center for Hope Hospice.

Did you know that Scotch Plains and Elizabeth have residential hospice facilities? Or that many Medicare supplemental plans are providing hearing aid benefits? Are you aware doctors still make house calls? And that personalized in-home health care is available when the need arises? Did you also know that there are services that assist with down- sizing and moving transitions? The mission of the Caring Sharing Network is to educate the senior community and their caregivers about these issues.

The Caring Sharing Network was started in the Fall of 2008 by Lois Shanker of Right at Home.  Having given over 200 presentations, the Caring Sharing Network is a dedicated group of woman who represent various service providers in the Union County area. “We felt there was a real need to educate seniors and caregivers about vital services available in their own backyard. Many people wait until a crisis situation arises and then find themselves scrambling to locate the right help and resources. Our objective is to prepare seniors and caregivers with the information they need before an unexpected situation occurs”, says Ms. Shanker.

Each speaker has a personal story to tell with the goal of informing seniors and caregivers about important services of which they otherwise might not be aware.  Nancy Rager, Administrator at Peggy Coloney’s House of Center for Hope Hospice comments. “It is truly rewarding when a senior or caregiver comes up to us after our presentation and thanks us for sharing this vital information with them.  They are very appreciative.”

The Caring Sharing Network has given presentations to AARP Groups, Senior Community Groups, Knights of Columbus, Retired Men’s Clubs, Women’s Groups, Caregiver Support Groups, Church and Synagogue Groups all of which have been very well received.
