Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains will hold an open house for prospective members on Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 11 am - 1 pm. Clergy, professional staff and lay leaders will be on hand to give tours and answer questions about the synagogue and its Religious School. Adults are invited to bring their children, as there will be a party for Religious School students running concurrently with the open house. Children may attend the party, which will feature free hot dogs, drinks and entertainment.
Congregation Beth Israel is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue, serving the religious, cultural, educational and social needs of congregants from Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Westfield and surrounding towns. It has an active Sisterhood, Men’s Club and youth group, plus a wide array of programs, ranging from adult education courses to social action opportunities. Congregation Beth Israel’s Religious School was one of the first three congregations in North America to be designated as a Framework for Excellence School by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. The Religious School offers classes from pre-school through 12th grade, as well as special needs instruction.
Synagogue membership is not required for programs through second grade. “The open house is a great way for people in the community to learn about our synagogue and our school,” said Susan Menaker, co-chair of Congregation Beth Israel’s Member Relations Committee, which is sponsoring the open house. “We planned the open house to coincide with our Religious School’s end-of-year party so that prospective members could actually meet the parents and the children who make up our synagogue family,” Menaker said.
