Fatal Police-Involved Shooting Being Investigated In Union County

According to the Union County Prosecutor's Office: 

An Elizabeth police officer responding to a domestic incident on Sunday shot and killed a man wielding a knife, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Monday.

The circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office. The suspect who was fatally shot has been identified as 44-year-old John Omar DelValle of Elizabeth.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Sunday, an officer responding to the 300 block of Union Avenue in Elizabeth encountered DelValle holding a 49-year-old woman at knifepoint, according to the investigation.

During an altercation that followed, the officer fired a single shot from his service weapon, striking DelValle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither the woman nor the officer who fired the shot, a 23-year veteran of the Elizabeth Police Department, was injured. Both were transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.
