Senior Center Announces Upcoming Events

The (NPSCC) offers many opportunities for seniors to socialize, learn and have fun.  On a regular basis, there are free classes and activities to keep residents age 55 and older active and engaged. 

The full ongoing program schedule is available on the web site (www.newprov.org/seniorcenter, select Activities) and is also available at the Center, located at 15 West Fourth Street.  They include a broad array of exercise classes, art, games, gardening, musical performances, speakers, a walking group and more.

Seniors will be treated to wonderful music in the upcoming months. Performances include vocal students on Nov. 2, Wharton Music Center on Dec. 14, and The Chatham Brass on Dec. 21.  These performances will be held during the 11 a.m. Wednesday weekly meetings of seniors at the Center, where other information is also shared. 

Those on Medicare must select changes to their 2012 Medicare health plan by Dec. 7, 2011.  Therefore, on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m., a representative from SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) will be available at the Center for a discussion of the changes.

To honor veterans, the Senior Center will host a Veteran’s Day Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 11.  A service will be held at the located on Elkwood Avenue, at 11 a.m., after which those being honored will enjoy lunch and music by Wharton Music Center at the NPSCC, 15 East Fourth Street.  The lunch is being generously provided by local food vendors at no cost to attendees.  Advanced registration is required, so please visit or contact the Center at 908-665-0046 before Friday, Nov. 4.

Seniors Day at New Providence High School is a fall favorite.  Participants will be taken by bus (mandated due to lack of available parking at the high school) from the Center to the high school on Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. What follows is a day of fun and entertainment as attendees are treated to a preview of the fall play, The Miracle Worker, a turkey luncheon and concerts.  This trip is free for New Providence seniors, but space is limited, so advance sign-up is required.

A new addition to the Center schedule is Movie Night.  Once a month on a Friday night, a movie is shown, with popcorn and a discussion afterwards.  A suggested donation of $5 covers an evening of fun.  The next two showings are Nov. 18 (The Secret) and Dec. 9 (movie TBA). 

On Dec. 4, seniors will travel to The Thayer Hotel in West Point.  This luxury hotel is on the grounds of the Academy and mixes military history with its beautiful Hudson River setting.  The day includes transportation, a champagne brunch and concert presented by the cadets. The cost is $75, and advanced registration is required.

The annual holiday dinner will be held at the Center on Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m.  The holiday spirit will be evident with decorations, vocal entertainment and a catered meal.  Tickets are $18 and may be purchased at the Center.

The final 2011 event at the Center is a Card and Games Fundraiser Night to be held Saturday, Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m.  Participants will play some games and have fun as they prepare to usher in 2012.  Check the web site or the Center for more details in the coming weeks.
