New Providence Artist's Work On Display at Somerset Hills YMCA

The Art of Linda Howe is at the Y in Basking Ridge; New Providence Artist to hold Touch Drawing Demonstration at closing reception on March 31

"Art is everywhere you look for it, hail the twinkling stars for they are God's careless splatter." — El Greco

Members flock to the Somerset Hills YMCA in Basking Ridge to grow in mind, body and spirit. During the month of March, visitors to the Y will enjoy the talent of New Providence artist Linda Howe.

About 40 works (many of which are award winning) are on display, including equine and wildlife illustrations, as well as a selection of “touch drawing” pieces, created by a process that involves no contact with the paint itself.

Dana Tabor, Arts Coordinator for the Y, said the facility is "so much more than just a place to work out; we place great emphasis on the arts, embracing all kinds of mediums as well as photography, dance, music and theatre."

Howe, a visual artist, educator, poet, muralist and Master Tree Steward, told Patch that she draws her inspiration from Native American wisdoms and her love of nature.  She described touch drawing as "an intuitive form of drawing" and said the method is "about self discovery and virtually touching into the mystery of creativity.”

The technique will be demonstrated by Howe at the artist’s closing reception on Saturday, March 31 from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Somerset Hills YMCA, located at 140 Mt. Airy Road.

"Lack of funding in education across the nation has unfortunately impacted children’s access to fine arts," Tabor added. "Highlighting arts at the Y through displays like these, and offering a broad selection of arts programs, are some of the many ways we step up to fill the gap that some of our children might be experiencing.”

Artwork is for sale prior to and at the closing reception on March 31.

“I enjoy bringing diverse people together, supporting family play time, community, health, wellness, and creativity," Howe told Patch. "The YMCA seeks to promote and embody those values, so it’s a good venue for me to show my work.”
