New Providence Orchestra Group to Perform at Kennedy Center

The intergenerational orchestra featuring players from 10-75 will make its first appearance at the Washington venue July 30.

Rehearsals are underway as 50 members of the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra prepare for their trip to the nation's capital: The ensemble, based in New Providence and made up of musicians who range in age from 10 through 75, have been invited to perform July 30 at the Kennedy Center. 

The concert will be the NJIO's first time playing at the renowned venue.

The all-volunteer orchestra often can be seen and heard in free concerts presented in different several New Jersey towns, including monthly performances at area senior care centers and hospitals.

New Providence resident Sararose Nassani, a cellist who recently graduated from Newark Academy and is a member of the New Jersey Youth Symphony, will be among those headed to Washington along with her sister, mother and grandfather. 

Asked what makes the NJIO special, Nassani cited the group's "fun atmosphere."

"There’s not a lot of competition to be first chair, but there is a lot of compatibility to try and do better,”  she said. 

The Kennedy Center concert will be the first official performance of NJIO’s newly appointed Artistic Director and Symphony Conductor, Warren Cohen.  Cohen also serve as music director and conductor of the orchestra MusicaNova of Scottsdale, Ariz., and concert artist in onducting at Kean University.  He is also celebrated as an award-winning composer.
