Breathe Fitness Studio: A Unique Fitness Experience

Breathe offers group classes and specializes in one-on-one instruction.

Spring is beginning, and sure enough, plenty of people will be looking to get into shape as we head into the summer months. While there are several gyms and studios in the area that can help people of all ages with their fitness goals, Breathe Fitness Studio in Mountainside offers a different experience from that of a regular gym.

Breathe, which is located at 1055 Route 22 East in Mountainside, is owned and directed by Lawrence Wasserman. Wasserman emphasized the focus on personal, one-on-one instruction at Breathe, which is something that not all gyms focus on.

“We’re attracting people that have been to (gyms) where you might have a monthly recurring membership, and you go in there and use the equipment on your own pace. Personal training might be an option, but it’s not the main focus,"said Wasserman. “I feel that everybody that belongs to a gym or health club is, metaphorically, on the road to health and wellness. I like to think that when they come here, they’re met with a guide that takes them from Point A to Point B in a very succinct way.”

Clients at Breathe come in after making appointments to work with a personal trainer. The trainers not only assess where each client is from a physical standpoint at the outset of training, but also get to know their client to see what other stressors are present in their lives.

“Our relationship begins with a very thorough fitness assessment," said Wasserman. “Not only do we test your muscles to find out what’s tight and what’s stretched, and how to integrate that, but we’re also looking at the degree of psychosocial stress in your life—medications, family history—to really craft the correct program that makes sense and is very specific to you.”

Getting to know clients is also very important for Wasserman and the trainers at Breathe, who try to establish positive, fun relationships with clients in their workout environments.

“We place you with someone that we know you’ll click with. You’ll have a good time (with your trainer)," said Chris Gkahopoylos, a personal trainer at Breathe. “It’s someone who is going to help you feel motivated, and when you like someone, we figure you’re going to follow the nutrition stuff.”

After all, establishing positive working relationships is the first step toward success.

“We are very results-driven, and that requires a good dialogue and ongoing communication. We want to know if you’re not happy," said Wasserman. “We want to know if you’re not getting results, and we want to know why. We want to make sure that we’re doing our part to help you. Sometimes, it’s some life-coaching, or what I call training from the neck up.”

Now is as good a time as ever to see what Breathe is all about. In addition to the group classes, yoga, pilates, and TRX training the studio offers, Breathe is currently in the middle of “March Madness”. During this period, Breathe is offering its premium classes at the same price as its regular group classes. During this time, members are encouraged to invite guests to see what Breathe is all about.

Even after March Madness ends, Wasserman hopes to continue the same offer for members.

“We’re gonna keep that going so they’ll be able to enjoy those classes and, for the same amount of money, get a lot more value," said Wasserman.
