Green Light Batting Cages Offer a Way to Improve Baseball Skills

Local business begun by baseball parents gives kids an indoor facility.

With baseball season approaching, many area baseball players are looking for a place to gain an edge as they get ready for competition to begin. Green Light Batting Cages, located at 10 Summit Avenue in Berkeley Heights, is eager to assist in the preparations.

Green Light, which was co-founded by local residents Steve Dilly and Mark Frohman, opened its doors on January 1 of this year and has seen business continue to grow ever since.

“All things considered, it’s progressed as well as can be expected," said Dilly. “We just opened up on New Year’s Day 2011, business has been increasing, and the important thing is that the people that come, come back. They like it. Once they’re here, it’s a matter of getting the word out.”

Spreading the word is important for Green Light, who are open to keep the strong tradition of local baseball intact within Berkeley Heights and the surrounding area.

“We have a very good baseball town here in Berkeley Heights," said Dilly. “Our sons are 14; they’re eighth graders. There was nowhere in the area for our kids to work out indoors.”

“We just wanted to keep the spirit and baseball alive in our surrounding area," said Dilly.

While Dilly described himself as a “behind-the-scenes kind of guy”, Frohman has a wealth of experience coaching, having coached at the AAU level for eight years. In addition, Green Light has established a relationship with experienced baseball trainers throughout the area that can provide additional instruction.

“We have expert trainers that come in independent of us, and we refer you to a trainer," said Dilly. “They work with the kids on all different levels, with hitting and catching.”

Dilly believes that Green Light can provide a great baseball learning environment to a large range of players, regardless of skill or age.

“We vary from younger kids, we’ve had a couple of college groups, and we’ve had all varying skills," said Dilly. “We’ve had beginners to all-state players. We’ve had a lot of softball as well. We cater to a large group.”

It has become such a large group, in fact, that Green Light has to take reservations from people or teams wishing to use its facility. People and teams alike are able to reserve times to use the facility by scheduling in advance.

“We’re a small operation, so a team would rent out the whole site," said Dilly. “It gives them four workstations, and the team has the place to themselves so they can operate the way they want.”
