Local New Providence Businesses Join in to Support Red Ribbon Week

Visit Angelo's Pizzeria, Skin Deep, Kidding Around, Braunschweiger Jewelers and CVS next week for discounts, to make a contribution, or to thank them for participating.

Every year toward the end of October, New Providence joins the country in recognizing Red Ribbon Week, a national event that honors the memory of US drug enforcement agent Enrique Camarena, who was murdered by drug dealers while on duty in Mexico in 1985.  As a memorial, Camarena’s colleagues began wearing small badges of red satin, which have come to symbolize the stand against drugs.  The symbol of the red ribbon caught on, calling people to take action across the country to show the nation’s intolerance of drugs.

In our community, the New Providence Alliance to Prevent Alcohol and Drug Abuse sponsors a number of programs to support the message of Red Ribbon Week, including an anti-drug themed poster contest in the middle school; a kick-off ceremony at Centennial Park and proclamation by the mayor; a prescription drug information program for seniors; age-appropriate programs at the Elementary schools; and a high school assembly, to name a few.

This year, local businesses are joining in to help raise awareness for Red Ribbon Week and support the Alliance in their efforts to run programs that inform, educate, and help prevent drug and alcohol abuse.
