Five Things You Need to Know Today, August 1st

Wow! It's already August. Which means the temperature is supposed to drop an average of two degrees from July, and if that holds true, we'll take any kind of relief from the heat.

With a new month comes plenty of opportunity have some summer fun before school starts, so make the most of summertime we have left. And if there's something you recommend, tells us in the comments section. We'd love to hear from you!

Here are five things to add to your planner today.

1. The Westfield Memorial Library will present the film Mao's Last Dancer today. There will be two performances, 2:00pm and 6:30pm. Registration required: sign up online or by calling the Circulation desk, 908-789-4090 ext 0. The library is located at E.Broad St.

2. Music to Move By will be presented by Berkeley Heights Public Library this evening. Ann Wild's program of movement and song for newborns up to age 5. Please sign up in advance at the Children's Desk for this Family Fun Night. The library is located at 290 Plainfield Ave.

3. The Mountainside Public Library will have a Book Discussion Group for children in grades 4th & 5th. This event will be from 3:00-4:00pm and registration is required.  Limit is 15. The library is located on Watchung Ave.

4. Strength of Women in Art Exhibition: will be held at , 1 Diamond Hill Rd, Berkeley Heights. The once-a-month event will take place from 5:00-8:00pm.

5. Tuesday is National Night Out! The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is hosting National Night Out at Union County’s Meisel Park in Springfield on Tuesday, August 2, 2011.  The free festivities begin at 6:00pm and continue with an outdoor screening of the popular Disney movie “G-Force” at dusk.

Free activities for children at Union County National Night Out include inflatable rides, “Bubblemania” bubble-blowing fun, Bingo, crafts, and more.  The Union County’s Bomb Squad, SWAT team, and K-9 Unit will stage live demonstrations, and there will be a hands-on exhibit of two dozen police and emergency vehicles along with the county’s Fire Safety Trailer.

A raffle is also included in the event, featuring Somerset Patriots tickets, Staples gift cards, bike helmets, Flip cams, and more.

Visitors are welcome to bring picnics. An ice cream vendor will also be on site. Free snacks are available courtesy of ShopRite, and there will be free hotdogs and bottled water courtesy of Target.

The screening of G-Force, a G-rated animated comedy, will begin at 9:00 p.m.  All are welcome.
