Five Things You Need to Know Today, August 8th

The Sussex County Fair continues while oldies but goodies rock Springfield.

Heres are five things you need to know for August 7, 2011.

1. The Sussex County Fair Continues: Carnival rides, animals, 4-H demos, live entertainment, costumed characters, farm fresh foods, homemade crafts, art, petting zoos and more can be found at the official, demonstrating all that is great about our Garden State. The fair runs daily through Sunday, Aug. 14 at the bucolic Sussex County Fairgrounds. For more information go to http://njstatefair.org/.

2. The Mountainside Public Library will have a Book Discussion Group for children in grades 4th & 5th. This event will be from 3:00-4:00pm and registration is required. Limit is 15.

3. Read to Simber at the Berkeley Heights Public Library today. Simber is a Bright & Beautiful Certified Therapy Dog, has passed the ACK Canine Good Citizens Test, completed 3 obedience classes and is enrolled in a 4th at St. Huberts. She also takes tracking and sheep herding classes.  No sign up needed to stop by and read to Simber between 6:30-7:30pm.

4. How Much Electricity Are You Wasting? Many homeowners think that turned-off appliances do not use electricity. But TVs, microwaves, stereos, computers—even cellphone chargers—still consume electricity when we think they are off.  George Washington University student Maxine Tagay, who has worked on several projects for the Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission, will speak about how to monitor energy usage in your home.  Thanks to the Environmental Commission, energy use monitors will be available to borrow with your library card so you can check how much your appliances consume. The time is 7:00-8:00pm.

5. Gary Lewis in Concert. Gary Lewis, the singer who famously asked "If Everybody Loves a Clown, Why Can't You," performs in Springfield tonight at the Jonathan Dayton HS. Lewis, the son of movie clown Jerry Lewis, enjoyed a string of hits in the mid-60s, including their breakout hit "This Diamond Ring."  This concert begins at 7:30pm is free and open to all. The school is located at 139 Mountain Ave.
