Five Things You Need to Know Today, July 21st

Today is July 21st, and on this date in history, the world's lowest temperature is recorded at Vostok StationAntarctica at minus 89.2 °C (−128.6 °F). Wouldn't be so bad to have that over the next two days, would it?

While Goodnight Saigon might be a movie to watch tonight, here are five things you might want to put on the schedule today.

1. The Mountainside Public Library will present the Folk Music Cafe tonight. The music will begin at 7:00pm and will feature "The Janes".  There will be light refreshments served. Admission is free.

2. The Scotch Plains Cultural Arts Committee presents the 2011 Village Green Summer Concert Series. This evening Amazing Dave and Jazz Lobsters will be performing beginning at 6:30pm. This concert will take place at Alan M. Augustine Park 430 Park Ave, Scotch Plains, NJ.  All are welcome.

3. Music in New Providence: There will be a free concert at Centennial Park. This is part of the Summer Concert Series and will feature Jersey Soul Band. The concert will be from 7:30pm-9:00pm and you are encouraged to bring a lawn chair of a blanket. This event will take place rain or shine.  

4. The Union County Performing Arts Center presents Nicole Atkins and the Black Sea this evening. The concert will begin at 7:00pm. Rolling Stone magazine named her one of the Ten Artists to Watch giving her 2007 debut album Neptune City 3 1/2 stars. This New Jersey born singer/songwriter has been featured in People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, on David Letterman and most recently with the release of her new album Mondo Amore, on the Conan O’Brien Show. Referred to as "a female Roy Orbison", early influences in country, blues and 60’s rock come through in her rich, earthy vocals accompanied by her new band The Black Sea who Atkins refers to as "the best lineup I’ve ever played with." The address is 1601 Irving St., Rahway. The concert is free.

5. Summer Movie Nights in Berkeley Heights will present Yogi Bear tonight.The movie will begin at 7:30pm and will be held at Memorial Field at Park and Plainfield Ave. All are welcome.
