Five Things You Need to Know Today, Sept. 19

Learn how to help children with special needs.

Today is Monday, September 19, 2011, and now that MusicFest is over, here are five things to add to your planner today.

1. The Springfield Public Library is hosting "Glimpses of the World Trade Center in Film: 1975-2001". Today's film is The spectacular motion picture that started it all!  "Superman The Movie" starring Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Daily Planet who is really Superman, the famous protector of truth, justice, and the American way.  With Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, and many other great stars. The twin towers can be seen in several of Superman’s flying scenes.  Directed by Richard Donner. This movie is 142 minutes and rated PG.  Bring your lunch and coffee and cookies will be served at 11:30 am.  Call the library 973-376-4930 for more information. The library is located at 66 Mountain Ave.

2. Peer Mentor Training in Summit to Help Children with Special Needs: Eileen Wotanowski, Behaviorist, will provide hands-on training to those interested in becoming a Peer Mentor for children with special needs in our local community.  You will learn how various developmental disabilities such as Aspergers, Autism, ADHD, visual and hearing impairments as well as physical impairments impact how children play and learn.  Beyond learning how and why these children see their world differently, you will learn how to work and interact with them.  You will learn techniques to help these children have enjoyable sports and recreation experiences.

A certificate will be awarded at the end of the evening.

This certificate will enable you to work as a Peer Mentor volunteer in any of our special needs programs in Summit, New Providence, Berkeley Heights or other communities offering our programs.  New Peer Mentors who go on to mentor in our programs will not only obtain community service credit for their time spent mentoring but gain valuable leadership and teaching skills, helpful in pursuing employment, while giving back to the community and touching the lives of special children.  This training is open to children 10 years of age or older.  Parents are also welcome to attend to observe. Advance registration is required.
