Five Things You Need to Know Today, September 8th

Supplies for Irene victims, mammogram lecture part of busy Thursday.

Today is Thursday September 8, 2011 and here are five things you need to know today.

1. Clothing and Food Drive to Help Irene Victims: Congressman Leonard Lance congressional district offices in Westfield and Flemington are now accepting food, clothing, household cleaning supplies, like trash bags, mops, bleach, and disinfectants to help assist area flood victims in Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties. This clothing and food drive will continue through Friday, September 16, 2011. Donations may be dropped off at the following locations: Lance’s Westfield Office is located at 425 North Avenue East.  Residents with questions may call 908-518-7733. All are encouraged to donate.

2. Highlanders Girls Varsity Tennis vs. Kent Place School. The Gov. Livingston girls varsity tennis team hosts Kent Place School this afternoon. The match will begin at 4:00pm and will be held at Columbia Park Tennis Courts.  All are welcome.

3. Special Presentation of "Hannah". There will be a special VIP presentation of Hannah at Kean University this evening. The VIP Reception will be held in the Human Rights Institute Gallery at Kean University starting at 6:00pm. The performance will be a Zella Fry Theatre, Vaughn Eames Fine Arts Building and will begin at 8:00pm followed by a Champagne/Dessert Reception. The reception will begin at 10:00pm in the lobby of Vaughn Eames. Tickets are $100 per person ($50 Tax-deductible) R.S.V.P. to Premiere Stages at (908) 737-4092.

4. The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders will be holding their Agenda Setting Meeting this evening at 7:00pm.  This meeting will take place in the Freeholders’ Meeting Room, Administration Building, 10 Elizabethtown Plaza, 6th Floor, Elizabeth.  The meeting is open to the public.  Anyone requiring a sign language interpreter should contact the Office of the Clerk of the Board at 908-527-4140.  For more information, visit http://ucnj.org/government/freeholders.

5. Lecture: Do I Really Need an Annual Mammogram? will be presented by John Cunningham, MD, Breast Surgeon & Medical Director of the SMG Breast Care Center. The best way to fight breast cancer is to have a plan that helps you detect the disease in its early stages. Is a mammogram enough? Learn about which breast imaging tests are right for you, mammogram, ultrasound or breast MRI and understand the benefits of clinical breast exams, (CBE).
