The Week Ahead: March Mayhem, Movies, St. Patrick's Day Parade

Plus, local senior citizens can enjoy a traditional St. Patrick's Day dinner, while The Provident Bank is hosting a fund-raising drive to benefit the Community FoodBank of NJ.

1. The will screen the movie "Fireflies in the Garden" (2008) Rated R, on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. For more information, visit newprovidencelibrary.org.

2. The New Providence Education Foundation is hosting "March Mayhem," a student/teacher basketball game, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gymnasium. Teachers and staff from all four district schools will play, basketball seniors from the high school will coach and referee, while other NPHS students will announce the events. The high school Jazz choir will perform the National Anthem. There will also be two basketball contests during the event, including a Free Throw Contest for K-6th grade during the 1st quarter and a Half Court Throw Contest for 7th-12th graders during 3rd quarter. The grand prize for each contest is 2 tickets to a NJ Nets v. NY Knicks home game. Sponsored by Buffalo Wild Wings, there will be a HOT Wild Wings Contest at half time for 7th-12th graders. Tickets are $5 per person, while children 5 years old and under will be admitted for free. 3. The is hosting a St. Patrick's Dinner on Wednesday, beginning at 5 p.m. Seniors will be able to enjoy a festive evening with a traditional dinner that will include corned beef. Entertainment will be provided by Ted T'Connor. The cost is $16 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (908) 665-0046.

4. The 16th Annual Union County St. Patrick's Day Parade is set for Saturday at 1 p.m., which will begin at Commerce Avenue and Morris Avenue in Union. This year’s Grand Marshal, Bill Dugan of Clark, will lead the march of bagpipe and high school bands, local police and fire department units, veterans groups and many more organizations through the center of Union. In keeping with a parade tradition, the Union County Emerald Society will host officials from Shannon, Ireland. Again this year, the parade will feature a Kid Zone presented by the Union Special Improvement District.  The Kid Zone, located at Stuyvesant and Morris Avenue, will feature inflatable rides, walk-around entertainers and activities for the whole family. 5. The Provident Bank is once again hosting a “Deposit $1 of Hope” fund-raising drive at each of its branches to benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ).  The fundraiser began Monday, February 13, 2012 and will run through Monday, April 2, 2012. For every dollar contributed to the CFBNJ, the organization distributes $9.59 worth of food and groceries to local food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and homeless shelters.
