The Week Ahead: Sports Awards Ceremony, Ice Cream Social and School Budget Hearing

Here's a rundown of what's happening around the borough this week.

Monday

  • The Senior Citizens Center is hosting a presentation by the Sharing Network at 10:30 a.m.
  • The Zoning Board is meeting in the Municipal Center at 8 p.m.
  • The girls’ varsity softball game against Butler High School today is now cancelled.
  • Athletes from the New Providence winter sports teams will be honored at tonight’s awards ceremony, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
  • The New Providence United Methodist Church is hosting its weekly Re-Employment Seminar at 7:30 p.m. This week’s topic is advanced interviewing skills.

Tuesday

  • The New Providence Memorial Library will screen “Hereafter” starring Matt Damon at 2 p.m. and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” at 7 p.m. Both movies will be screened in the Conti Family Meeting Room.
  • The boys’ varsity baseball team will play at Elmwood Park High School in a scrimmage at 4 p.m.
  • The girls’ varsity lacrosse team will host Millburn High School at 4 p.m. in a scrimmage.

Wednesday

  • The New Providence Senior Citizens Center is meeting at 11 a.m., with a craft activity to follow at 2 p.m.
  • The New Providence Memorial Library is hosting a lecture series, sponsored by the Summit Jewish Community Center, beginning at 9:15 a.m. Visit the library’s website for more information.
  • The New Providence Music Boosters is hosting an Ice Cream Social at the high school, beginning at 6:45 p.m., to raise money for the district’s music programs. Ensembles from both elementary schools and the middle school will be performed in the auditorium, followed by make-your-own ice cream sundaes from Zita’s in the cafeteria. Tickets are $4 at the door.
  • The boys’ varsity baseball team will host Parsippany in a scrimmage at 4 p.m.
  • The girls’ varsity softball team will play at Manville High School at 4 p.m. in a scrimmage.
  • The boys’ varsity tennis team will host Metuchen High School at 4 p.m. in a scrimmage.

Thursday

  • The Seniors Gardening Group will take a bus trip to the Rutgers Cooperative Master Demo Gardens at the Watchung Reservation from noon to 3 p.m. Seniors interested in attending can sign up at the center.
  • The Municipal Court will convene at 3 p.m. in the Municipal Center.
  • The boys’ and girls’ track teams will compete against Summit and Madison at 4 p.m.
  • The Board of Education is hosting a public hearing for the proposed 2011/2012 school budget at 8 p.m. in the high school/middle school cafeteria. Board members will present the budget and welcome feedback from the community.

Friday

  • All schools are closed today for Staff Development.
  • The boys’ varsity baseball team will play at Bound Brook High School in a scrimmage at 4 p.m.
  • The girls’ varsity softball team will host Bound Brook High School at 4 p.m. in a scrimmage.
  • The girls’ varsity lacrosse team will host Morristown High School at 4 p.m. in a scrimmage.
  • The boys’ varsity lacrosse team will play at Morristown High School in a scrimmage at 4:30 p.m.

Saturday

  • The County of Union is sponsoring a recycling event, where Union County residents can get rid of unwanted televisions, computers and other equipment in an environmentally friendly manner. You can drop off unwanted equipment at the Alcatel-Lucent Technologies facility on Mountain Avenue from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The limit is six electronic items per car. 
  • The New Providence Athletic Booster Club is hosting a Spring Clothing Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the student parking lot at the high school. Individuals bringing clothing, shoes, toys and linens are asked to place items in plastic bags. Pillows and blankets will not be accepted.
