Top-of-the-Hill in Burgers and Fries

Newly opened Hilltop Burgers and Fries offers a classic burgers and fries menu.

The Angelo family is busy these days.  With two outposts of their popular restaurant, La Pastaria, serving homestyle Italian cuisine, they just added Hilltop Burgers and Fries right here in Summit.

Burger joints are all the rage these days.  While New York City has Shake Shack, Smashburger and Five Guys are popping up as fast as Starbucks.

We finally have a place to call our own.

There's a comfortable familiarity walking into this small, primarily take-out burger spot located on Summit Avenue across from the basketball courts and Mabie Playground. Perhaps it's the iconic burger and fries combination or the maroon and gold decor that screams Summit. It's got a casual vibe like it's been around awhile.

Co-owner Robert Angelo said he and his cousin Philip saw a real need for a restaurant like this in town.

"The area calls for it and its great for kids," Angelo said. "Who doesn't love a burger and fries?"

The Angelos are smart and know their audience well.  With Philip's four kids ranging in age from 12-21, and all raised in Summit, they embrace the community of which they are so supportive.  Nothing is more evident of that than the menu, a Hilltopper's dream come true.  It's as if they gave their kids creative license to come up with a menu of all their faves and no frills.

Quite simply, it's burgers, fries, wings and salad with a hometown twist.

The featured burgers honor all five Elementary Schools, the Middle School and the High School with combos like The Jefferson burger with Taylor ham and cheese and the L.C.J.S.M.S burger with pulled pork and cheese (both $7.70).  Of course if those don't strike your fancy, you can build your own with every topping imaginable from bacon to guacamole to caramelized onions.  That's called Build-a Hill-Topper, not to be confused with The Topper which is the meat; a single or double burger or chicken.  A single burger is 1/4 pound 100% pure beef and cooked to order.  The fries have something for everyone: shoestring, wedge, curley, waffle or the lunchroom favorite, tater tots. Fries wouldn't be complete without extras like chili, cheese and jalapenos -- and thank goodness Hilltop Burgers and Fries offers all that too.

"We're still in the process of putting on the final touches." Angelo added. "We're going to have milkshakes too as well as homemade soup and daily specials."

Hilltop Burgers and Fries is walking distance from downtown Summit which is ideal. Across from the park and train station, there's a parking lot in the back and a few tables to eat in. Or, take out and have a picnic while the weather's still warm.  Either way, it's a home run in our little neck of the woods.
