Union County Freeholders to Install Solar Panels in Mountainside and Across Union County

By 2012, Mountainside, Linden, and Elizabeth as well as many other communities across the county will see an increase in the amount of renewable energy sources used to keep the town up and running.

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders will be installing solar panels on top of the Trailside Nature Center in Mountainside, the Juvenile Detention Center in Linden, and the Ruotolo Justice Center in Elizabeth. The Suburban News reports that these projects are just a few of dozens of efforts to use renewable energy in Union County.

These three projects are being paid for in full by President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program.

Chairman of the Freeholders Deborah Scanlon stated that these projects are creating jobs in the private sector and are helping to lower electricity costs. The article notes that Scanlon expressed her gratitude for this government program.

“The Recovery Act made an enormous difference in the lives of many Union County residents when the nation’s economic crisis began, and it continues to be a valuable resource as we look ahead to a better future,” said Scanlon.

Dozens of solar energy projects were enacted last year as part of the Union County Improvement Authority’s Renewable Energy Program. These included 40 solar installations on the roofs of facilities throughout the county.

Construction of these three projects is expected to be completed by late summer or early fall of 2012.
