Week in Review: Scholarships, GL UCT Championship, Share NJ 5K Preview

Here's news from Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence this week.

Community pools in Berkeley Heights and New Providence open today at noon and 11 a.m., respectively. Also, Trailside Nature Science Center is hosting story time today and tomorrow at 3 p.m.

Memorial Day is the perfect opportunity to thank our veterans for all they've done for us and for our country. To honor the veterans in our communities, Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence will be hosting parades on Monday. .

Newsweek just released its list of the best public high schools in the country and out of the 1,000 schools that made the grade. Elsewhere around Union County's public schools, Elizabeth High School ranked 217, Summit ranked 251, Cranford ranked 279, Westfield High ranked 352, Jonathan Dayton ranked 584, A.L. Johnson ranked 820 and Scotch Plains/Fanwood ranked 769.

With streaking rival No. 6 New Providence standing between them and their second consecutive Union County Championship, the top-seeded Governor Livingston Varsity Softball team knew they would have to play their best game of the tournament. “We just took it as any other game,” said catcher Jenna Kulback. “Just focused on this game and not things that have happened in the past.” After being tested several times on their route to the tournament final, and their second consecutive county championship on Saturday afternoon. Governor Livingston did all the small things in their victory, showing off some impressive base running and sterling defense behind starter Jordan Robbins (7 IP, 2 ER, 5 K).

Join the 1,959 individuals already signed up for the set for Sunday, June 10, and run or walk in honor of those who have lost their lives, and in celebration of those whose lives have been saved through organ and tissue donation. The second annual race, presented by Pfizer and hosted in conjunction with the New Providence Business and Professional Association, will feature a runner’s competition at 9 a.m., a fun walk/run at 10 a.m. and the kiddie sprints at 11 a.m.

In the semifinal versus Green Brook, the New Providence Patriots won 3-2, in extra-innings. Strong fielding and pitching were instrumental in the victory. defeated the Ridge North Red Devils 6-5 in another very exciting game. The Patriots got the W on Charle Barth's walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth.

The New Providence Business Community is proud to announce that they are funding $3,000 in scholarships for two 2012 graduating seniors. (one male and one female) who has an interest in business and shows entrepreneurial spirit.  The high school will select the recipients who best meet the qualifying criteria.  Students must apply for the scholarships through the high school.

The Mountainside PTA sponsored the annual on Thursday, May 17, 2012. The students brought their bikes, helmets, and locks to school in the morning. They participated in a "AAA" bicycle inspection performed by the .
