Week in Review: Bruno's Breakfast, Softball UCT Final, Liquor Timeline

Here's the top news in Berkeley Heights, Mountainside and New Providence this week.

Delis are a North Jersey staple, a haven for a quick and tasty breakfast, overstuffed sandwiches, sumptuous side dishes and lots of chatter. Everyone has their favorite, either for the food or the connection. Mountainside Delicatessen clinched the vote in Mountainside with 100 percent of the vote. In Berkeley Heights, The Sub Zone was voted the favorite, receiving 50 percent of the vote, followed by Goodman's Restaurant & Deli, which received 45 percent of the vote. Finally, in New Providence, Tables for 2 Panini Cafe dominated, receiving 80 percent of the vote.

About 40 Berkeley Heights business owners had to discuss ways for the business community and the municipality to work together. Bruno said there are plans underway to establish the identity of Berkeley Heights, as other neighboring towns have, by installing three town clocks as well as brick pavers and benches throughout the downtown area, and establishing a Business Improvement District, also referred to as a Special Improvement District.

When a New Providence resident wants to have some holiday cheer next December, they should be able to imbibe, thanks to the borough council's formal introduction of an amended Alcoholic Beverages ordinance Monday night. The ordinance clears the way to break away from the borough's Puritan roots and approve the first liquor license in the town founded as Turkey in 1720. Councilman Bob Robinson , which they expect to be announced Dec. 10.
