With Pizza Hut Closed, New CVS Expected to Rise

Mayor says shopping center on Springfield Ave. will add second pharmacy in Berkeley Heights.

When the Pizza Hut on Springfield Avenue recently closed its doors, some Berkeley Heights residents were wondering what would happen to the space.

Well, according to Mayor Joseph Bruno, the will add a new CVS pharmacy in that location, with plans for the old Pizza Hut building to be razed, and a brand new building to rise, possibly within the next 12 months.

"The owners of that center called me on Saturday to tell me they signed an agreement with CVS," said Berkeley Heights Mayor Bruno. "It was a planned thing that Pizza Hut was going out and they negotiated the termination of that lease in favor of (CVS).

The CVS will will be built pending board approval.

"I think it's great," continued Bruno. "When Drug Fair went out, it didn't go out because it wasn't doing business. It went out because the chain financially wasn't strong. We supported two drug stores for years. I think we can support two drug stores in town. I think it will be good competition for Walgreen's."
