Community Corner

Fall Reading Club for Children with Special Needs

Summit
Community Programs and TryCAN are pleased to announce that the Reading Club
will be running again this fall, a series of 4 weekly classes on Wednesdays
starting September 25 from 4:45-5:30pm at the Summit Community Center, 100
Morris Avenue.

This is a
popular and affordable class designed for children ages 5-9 to help struggling
or reluctant readings experience the joys of reading.  In a completely embarrassment and failure
free setting, the class will capitalize on strengths, instill self-confidence
and foster a Can-Do attitude to help children read more confidently.

Our Club
is led by Sarah Hanson, a Certified Teacher who has a wealth of experience as a
teacher in the school system and well as extensive experience teaching reading
to students with unique needs. Sarah has also worked extensively in recreation
for young children, so she brings a unique perspective to our program and is
able to meld her love of education and recreation into our reading club.

In
addition to working on core skills depending on your child's area (such as
decoding, word attack, comprehension, making appropriate reading choices) using
books, games, music and other activities, the Club plans on holding one class each
session at the library to allow your child to make book or other reading
choices in the community.  In the near future, the Club will also do some reading
activities on laptop computers.

As
always, our trained and experienced teen Peer Mentors will be at every class to
help the students participate, learn, and have fun.
