Longtime New Providence Resident Ellen Marie Martus Dies at 83

Martus moved to New Providence in 1955.

Ellen Marie Martus of New Providence, N.J., formerly of Madison, N.J., passed away on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, after a sudden illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, who died just five weeks prior.

Ellen was born Oct. 6, 1930, in Madison to the late Edward and Gladys (Ten Eyck) Dowling. She was a graduate of the Stafford Hall School of Business and worked for AT&T, Allstate Insurance, and Bell Laboratories before retiring. Ellen is remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and wife who truly put herself second in devotion and support of her family and friends. She married the love of her life, Joseph Martus, of Kearny, N.J. in 1954, and they enjoyed 59 years of marriage together. They settled in New Providence in 1955 where Ellen and Joe raised three children, Ellen Hepp (Mark) of Portsmouth, N.H.; John Martus of New Providence, and Kevin Martus (Barbara) of West Milford, N.J. In addition to her children, Ellen will be sadly missed by her sisters, Margaret McCormack, of Madison and Elizabeth Early (John), of Stirling, N.J., and her sister-in-law, Beatrice Dowling, of Madison. She leaves her four loving grandchildren, her grandson, Andrew Hepp (Erin) of Alexandria, Va.; and granddaughters, Elisa Hepp Shaffer (Marc) of Philadelphia, Pa.; Cristin Hepp, of Concord, N.H., and Rose Martus of West Milford. Ellen also leaves many nieces and nephews who were very dear to her. Her brothers, Edward Dowling, Joseph Dowling, and Frederick Dowling, all of Madison, preceded her in death.

Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at the Burroughs, Kohr, & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main St., Madison, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at St. Vincent Martyr Catholic Church, 26 Green Village Rd., in Madison, N.J. Burial will follow at St. Vincent's Cemetery in Madison. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
