Alleged Drunk Driver from New Providence Clocked Going 84 mph

New Providence resident charged with DWI, speeding and reckless driving.

A New Providence man was arrested after Chatham Borough police allegedly clocked his vehicle going nearly 50 miles per hour over the speed limit down Main Street and determined he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, police said Thursday.

Chatham Borough Police Sgt. Scott O'Connor was operating radar on Main Street Thursday at approximately 2:10 a.m., near Minton Avenue when he observed a 2007 Honda pass his location allegedly traveling at 84 miles per hour in the 35-mile-per-hour zone, police said.

O'Connor stopped the vehicle on River Road in Summit and made contact with the driver, Anthony Loughlin, 34, of New Providence, police said.

According to police, Loughlin allegedly showed signs of intoxication. He was arrested and brought to headquarters for breath testing, police said.

Loughlin was charged with driving while intoxicated, speeding, reckless driving and failure to exhibit documents, police said.

According to police, Loughlin was released to a family member after processing. Further court action is pending.
