A Plainfield man has been arrested and charged with shooting a city resident outside of a downtown nightclub last month, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Thursday.
Tywan Cobb, 33, of North Avenue in Plainfield is charged with first-degree attempted murder and three second-degree weapons offenses. Bail was set at $750,000 by state Superior Court Judge Robert J. Mega.
It was approximately 1:45 a.m. on June 29 when Plainfield police officers responding to a shots-fired call originating from the area of Hugo’s Lounge on the corner of East Front and Church streets found the victim, a 35-year-old male, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Jeremiah Lenihan, who is prosecuting the case. The man was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for treatment.

A joint investigation by the Plainfield Police Division and the Prosecutor’s Office’s Guns, Gangs, Drugs, and Violent Crimes Task Force resulted in the identification of Cobb as a suspect, and criminal complaints were filed in early July. A three-week search for Cobb ended with his arrest by FBI agents and Plainfield Police Division detectives Wednesday at his girlfriend’s home in Scotch Plains.
First-degree crimes typically carry a penalty of 10 to 20 years in state prison, while second-degree crimes typically result in sentences of 5 to 10 years.
