Berkeley Heights Fire Department Receives New Rescue Tools

Traveling on local roads now safer, thanks to $17,104 grant. Fire Department officials, firefighters to accept grant package during public event on Wednesday, July 18 at 1 p.m.

People living in and travelling through Berkeley Heights will be safer, thanks to $17,104 in new rescue tools that the is receiving.

DeWitt Stern Insurance and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company are donating a new hydraulic cutter and forcible entry tools to the Berkeley Heights Fire Department, enabling firefighters to rescue motor vehicle accident victims quickly and efficiently.

On average, the Berkeley Heights Fire Department responds to about four motor vehicle accidents per month and the department covers a five mile stretch of Interstate 78, which is a major transportation artery into and out of New York City. Route 78 also passes over several roads in Berkeley Heights, creating bridges that are susceptible to severe icing conditions. These overpasses have been the site of several serious crashes in recent years involving multiple occupants being trapped.

“We’re pleased to receive this grant for these rescue tools, which will greatly enhance our rescue operations capabilities,” said Fire Chief Anthony Padovano. “This new equipment is smaller and more lightweight than standard cutters, allowing rescuers to deploy them quickly and gain access to difficult-to-reach spots, such as the area around the steering column.”

Berkeley Heights Fire Department officials, firefighters, employees and executives from DeWitt Stern and Fireman’s Fund will come together at the Berkeley Heights Fire Department on Wednesday, July 18 at 1 p.m. for a special public event where the grant package will be presented and equipment will be displayed.

The grant is part of a nationwide philanthropic program funded by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. The program is designed to provide needed equipment, training and educational tools to local fire department and burn prevention organizations. Since 2004, Fireman’s Fund has issued grants to more than 1,900 different organizations, totaling more than $29 million. Independent insurance agencies and brokers that sell Fireman’s Fund products, like DeWitt Stern, are able to direct these grants to support the fire service.

“It is critically important that our local firefighters have the proper equipment needed to rescue victims in any situation,” said John Pullara of DeWitt Stern. “We’re proud to be able to help in such a tangible way, knowing so many people will benefit from the donation.”
