Berkeley Heights Police Blotter for the Week Ending April 24

Stolen laptop, outstanding warrants and police chase highlight a busy week.

Here's the latest from the Berkeley Heights police blotter for the week ending April 24.

On Monday, April 18, 2011, Sgt. Robert Deitch investigated a report of stolen property at a Connell Drive office.  The victim reported that his laptop computer, valued at approximately $500.00 was taken from his workspace sometime over the previous weekend.  The matter has been referred to the Investigations Division.

On Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 1:51 am, Ptl. Jeanne-Marie Mocarski arrested Michael Babalola, 30, of Newark and Oluseyi O. Osanyinlusi, 31, of Irvington.   Osanyinlusi was the operator of a 2000 Dodge that was stopped on Plainfield Avenue for erratic driving.  A subsequent investigation revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol, at which time he was placed under arrest.  Babalola, the passenger was found to be holding a no bail warrant out of Union Township for credit card fraud.  During the motor vehicle stop, an open container of Smirnoff Vodka was found in the vehicle.  Both parties were brought to police headquarters, processed and were charged with possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.  Osanyinlusi was also charged with driving while intoxicated and having no vehicle insurance. He was given a court date and released into the custody of a friend.  Babalola was turned over to the custody of the Union Township Police Department.

On Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 9:37 am, Ptl. Nicholas Franks arrested Agustina Obinnakwelu, 43, of Hillside.  Obinnakwelu was the operator of a 2000 Ford that was stopped after a license plate check revealed that she had a suspended license and warrants for her arrest.  Obinnakwelu initially refused to exit the motor vehicle when instructed to do so by Ptl. Massimino.  Once out of the vehicle, when advised that she was under arrest, Obinnakwelu refused to be handcuffed, struggling with the officers on scene.  She was eventually subdued and brought to police headquarters for processing where she was charged with resisting arrest and hindering apprehension.  

On Friday, April 22, 2011 at 9:25 am, Ptl. Jason Massimino arrested Mona Atwa, 34, of Staten Island, NY.  Atwa was the operator of a 2006 Mercedes Benz.  She was stopped after a computer check revealed that she held an outstanding warrant out of Greenwich Township in the amount of $639.00.  Atwa was brought to police headquarters, processed and released after posting bail.

On Friday, April 22, 2011 at 7:20 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested Antoine Satterfield, 45, of Elizabeth and Jeffrey N. Mayers, 42, of Elizabeth.  Satterfield was the operator of a 1996 Mazda which Ptl. DeSimoni stopped after observing it being operated erratically and after Ptl. DeSimoni saw the vehicle attempting to avoid him.  Satterfield eventually came to a stop on I-78 East near Drift Road.  During the investigation, and while Ptl. DeSimoni was checking the status of the driver while seated in his patrol car, the passenger, Mayers, stepped out of the vehicle at which time Satterfield put the vehicle in drive, initiating a pursuit with Ptl. DeSimoni.  Ptl. DeSimoni pursued the vehicle for a short distance at which time the pursuit was terminated in the area of Exit 45.  Mayers was then picked up at the initial scene by other units at which time he was found to be holding numerous warrants for his arrest by various law enforcement agencies.  A short time later, the New Jersey State Police advised police headquarters that the vehicle that had been pursued was found on I-78 in Springfield unoccupied and crashed into a guardrail.  Witnesses’ had observed Satterfield exit the vehicle and jump over another guardrail in the area of Morris Avenue.  Satterfield was eventually located by members of the Springfield Police Department, with suspected heroin in his possession, at which time Berkeley Heights police officers responded to take custody of him.  Satterfield was charged with eluding a law enforcement officer and numerous motor vehicle offenses along with drug charges in Springfield. Bail was set by Berkeley Heights Municipal Court Judge Donald Bogosian at $35,000.00.  Satterfield was then processed and lodged in the Union County Jail.
