BH Police Blotter: Department Investigating Theft, Panhandling

Police report two incidents in the past week.

The following reports are from the Berkeley Heights Police Department.

On Wednesday, June 13, 2012, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci investigated a report of panhandling at a Springfield Avenue business. 

The victim reported that while at a nail salon, a female entered the location and asked for money from patrons.  The suspect stated that she had lost her wallet and needed money to purchase items for her child’s birthday party.

After giving the suspect forty dollars,  the suspect gave the victim a false name and phone number to contact her later for repayment.  The suspect was described as a white female with brown hair and wearing a white tank top and black pants. 

The suspect was seen leaving the area in a small grey 4 door vehicle.  The matter has been referred to the Investigations Division.

 On Thursday, June 14, 2012, Sgt. Bradley Countryman investigated a reported diversion theft at a Chestnut Hill Drive residence. 

The elderly victim reported that at approximately 9:00 am that morning, two men claiming to be from the water company rang her doorbell and stated that they were there to check her water. 

While one of the men diverted her attention, the second suspect went through the victim’s purse, removing cash, and through various closets, removing jewelry.  The suspects were described as 2 white males in the mid 20’s with unshaven faces.   The matter has been referred to the Investigations Division.
