Union County authorities are working to determine the cause of a fire that started in the basement of a home.
New Providence police, fire and rescue personnel responded to a High Street home on a report of a blaze on Sept. 8. Upon arrival, officers saw flames coming from a basement window that were spreading to the side of the home, police said.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the basement of the house, and JCP&L and PSE&G responded to cut off utilities.
Fire departments from Berkeley Heights, Summit, Chatham Borough, Watchung and Fanwood also responded to assist.
The residents were able to evacuate and told responders that they heard a "loud bang" at the time of the fire's start, police said.
The Union County Arson Unit was requested to determine the cause of the blaze which has been determined to have started as an electrical fire in the basement.
