Mayor's Son at Wheel of Car Containing Marijuana, Cops Say

Christian Bruno, of Berkeley Heights, does not face drug charges.

The son of Berkeley Heights Mayor Joseph Bruno was at the wheel of a car that crashed into a home in Sheffield, Iowa, Sunday.

The car was found to contain more than four pounds of marijuana, but driver Christian Bruno was hit only with traffic charges.

Mayor Bruno told nj.com he's "not pleased" with what happened but thinks his son, Christian, was "very, very lucky" not to be hurt.

Passenger Fabrice Emogene of Maplewood was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana, failure to affix a drug tax stamp and possession of drug paraphernalia, after the police reportedly found the marijuana.

Christian Bruno was charged with failure to maintain control and failure to obey a stop sign. He was released on his own recognizance.

The mayor said Christian and Emogene were driving back from a trip in California when his son drove through a stop sign because the "sun was in his eyes," rolled his car and hit a home's garage, nj.com reported.

The mayor told nj.com he instructed his son to "pick better friends in the future."
