Merchant Scammed Out of $495, Police Say

New Providence business owner received a call from someone claiming to be from PSE&G.

Someone purporting to be from PSE&G scammed a New Providence business owner out of $495.

The business owner told police Aug. 19 of a phone call in which the caller said her power would be shut in 30 minutes unless she bought a “MoneyPak” pre-paid card and called back with the card number.

The business owner bought the card at CVS and provided the alleged scammer with the number, transferring $495 to them.

Police said the incident is under investigation.
