New Providence Police Blotter: Mar. 14 - Mar. 22

The New Providence Police Department recently handled a few arrests, reports of fraudulent transactions, a hacked Facebook account, and suspicious activity at a local residence.

03-14-2011: Corporal Steve Opalewski arrested Jeffrey D. Gimprich, age 63, of Dumont for an outstanding warrant out of Newark after Mr. Gimprich was involved in a motor vehicle crash.  He posted the bail and was released pending a court date with Newark.

03-14-2011: A resident of Spring Floral Drive reported her Facebook account was hacked and several emails were sent to her friends by the hacker who impersonated her while requesting money be sent to help her pay her bills.  The fraud is currently under investigation.

03-15-2011: A resident of Bradford Street reported a fraudulent transaction to her debit card from a Duane Reade store in New York City.  The fraud is currently under investigation by the Detective Bureau.

03-18-2011: A resident of the 800 block of Springfield Avenue reported suspicious activity has occurred at her residence in the last week.  She indicated several people have come to her residence asking to see the house because it was listed for rent on-line.  The resident indicated that she is the tenant but there were never any on-line ads for the house.  The resident said she also heard people talking outside of her window in the early morning and when she turned her light on, the people left. The incidents are currently under investigation for the possibility of being a diversion type of burglary attempts.

03-21-2011: A resident on Marion Avenue reports criminal mischief to his backhoe and equipment.  The incident is currently under investigation.

03-22-2011: Sergeant Frank Gaffney arrested Joseph Toto, age 62, of Summit with driving while intoxicated after a business reported that a male appeared to be intoxicated and was lying on the ground outside of the business.  Sergeant Gaffney, who was in the area, responded to the scene and found that Mr. Toto had driven onto the sidewalk and caused damage to a sign.  He was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
