A borough resident advised the police department of an Australian lottery scam that she received in the mail.  The letter advised her that she had won $1,950,000.00 and to contact the account officer.  This department has seen increases in these types of scams, which generally target the elderly and usually request personal identifying information.  These types of scams also tell the “winner” that they have to send money to the agency to pay for taxes or other fees before they can receive their “lottery winnings”.  These types of lotteries are scams and as a United States citizen, it is illegal to participate in international lotteries.  If you are a victim of one of these scams or have any questions, please contact the New Providence Detective Bureau.
