New Providence Police, Fire, EMS Responded to Saturday Fire on Fifth Street

An investigation determined the fire started in the kitchen and is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

This release was received from the New Providence police department.

On February 9, 2013, at approximately 6:56pm, a report of black smoke was seen coming from a residence in the area of Fifth Street. Upon investigation, a one story wood frame house was located on Fifth Street where fire
and smoke was coming from the rear of the residence.

Police, Fire and EMS personnel immediately responded to the scene. Crews from the New Providence Fire Department quickly began to extinguish the fire. With the assistance of the Berkeley Heights and Chatham Township Fire Departments, the fire was contained within an hour.

An investigation was launched by the Union County Arson Team and it was determined that the fire started in the kitchen. The preliminary investigation did not reveal anything of a suspicious nature. One police officer was treated for minor smoke inhalation but did not require any further medical attention.
