Phone Scammers Target New Providence Resident

Police say the resident was fooled once, but not the second time.

One New Providence was recently the target of two phone scams, but only fell for one.

New Providence Police say a resident on Madison Avenue received a call from someone posing as his grandson, asking for $1,900 to pay for car damage sustained while he was at a bachelor party.

"Someone then came on the telephone line and indicated they were a lawyer," according to police. "The scammers advised the victim to respond to CVS and send a MoneyGram to them to cover the damages to the vehicle."

Police say the money gram was sent to a location in Delaware.

But the scammers didn't stop there.

The Madison Avenue resident was called again by the same individuals, asking for $2,300 to pay for property damages. However, the resident found out his grandson was at work and not involved before sending money a second time.
