Prosecutor: Getty Station Owner's Killer Found

Police have caught the man they believe is responsible for .

Ronnie Fedo, 34, of Lake Hopatcong has been arrested and charged with first degree felony murder, first degree robbery, first degree aggravated manslaughter, death by auto and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, Morris County Prosecutor Robert A. Bianchi said at a press conference in Morristown Sunday.

Bianchi said that around 10 p.m. on Saturday, police received a call from a business located a half a mile of the Getty station where the robbery took place. Having viewed surveillance camera images and video publicized in the media, Bianchi said, the employee “immediately recognized the suspect.”

Police, who Bianchi said were out looking for the vehicle around Morris County, responded to the business. Jefferson police, the prosecutor's office and the Morris County Sherrif's Office worked to locate Fedo and his vehicle, found in Lake Hopatcong late Saturday evening.

Fedo is being held on $750,000 bail with no 10 percent option, and his vehicle has been impounded.

“[The Jefferson Police Department], along with the Morris County Prosecutor's Office and Morris County Sheriff's Office were instrumental in the quick resolution of the case,” Bianchi said, “but ultimately it was the citizen's assistance that was able to affect the arrest in such a timely manner.”

Ambaroglu was killed Saturday afternoon, police have said, when he tried to stop the man now identified by authorities as Fedo from robbing the store at his gas station. Jefferson police said Saturday that someone had reached behind the store's counter, and pulled out lottery tickets before making another purchase. Ambaroglu realized something was wrong and ran out of the store to confront the man, holding onto the man's car, police said. But the car took off onto Route 15, taking Ambaroglu with it, police said.

"Initial reports indicated that the victim was hanging off of the side of a gold sports utility vehicle after having been struck by the vehicle," a statement issued by Bianchi's office said Sunday. "The reports also indicate that the man had been dragged by the vehicle and that the vehicle kept going without stopping after striking the victim."

Jefferson police and medical personnel arrived at the scene, and found Ambaroglu, 65, in the road. The medical personnel tried to revive him and took him to St. Care's Hospital in Dover, where he was pronounced dead, Bianchi's office said.

Gas station surveillance video had captured the incident—including the theft of the lottery tickets, and the confrontation between Ambaroglu and the robber—Bianchi's office said. The images from that video were the ones seen by the nearby business' employee, ultimately leading authorities to Fedo.

"We continue to endeavor to bring our citizens into the law enforcement process to help us solve crimes and provide information and intelligence to assist us in making their communities safer," Bianchi said in the statement from his office.
