Smoke Smell Causes Council Meeting Evacuation

Just before the meeting was about to end Monday night, police officers smelled smoke in Council Chambers and asked all to evacuate. The smell was actually the result of a nearby campfire.

A campfire burning at a nearby residence caused the Borough Council meeting to abruptly end Monday night.

Toward the end of the meeting, police officers could smell smoke in the Municipal Center and Council Chambers, asking all to evacuate. Council members quickly voted on the consent agenda before adorning.

Most Council members and residents who were at the meeting stuck around outside the Municipal Center as firefighters arrived on the scene to investigate. After about 20 minutes, the cause of the smell was determined.

"They had an outdoor fire pit and the air is just so still that the smoke was just kind of hanging there," said Fire Chief Ralph Parlapiano, which Major J. Brooke Hern also confirmed. "When the fresh air ventilators came on, it sucked the smell in there."
