Springfield Celebrates National Night Out Tonight

Event includes a movie screening and more.

From 6 to 9 p.m. tonight, Springfield's Meisel field will be the safest place in Union County.

The Springfield Police Department and the Springfield Police Special Services Unit are joining with County and municipal law enforcement agencies to put on the Annual National Night Out event.

Families and other law-abiding citizens are encouraged to attend. Criminals, however, should probably stay away, as the place is going to be swarming with cops. Not only will Springfield's finest be on-hand, but so too will officers from Union County and nearby towns, as well as the latest tech and equipment the that law enforcement field has to offer.

The event is a police-community partnership aimed at preventing crime and drug use. , the event offered a fully loaded array of family activities, from bouncy castles to movies, music and food. In addition, families could check out police vehicles, tech equipment and more. Organizers said to expect similar attractions this year, as well as a special showing of the 2009 family film G-Force. In addition, 30 bicycle helmets donated by the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey will be raffled off. 

Last year, more than 37 million people from 15,110 communities in the U.S., U.S. Territories, Canada and Military Bases took part in the National Night Out.

Springfield's Meet and greet begins at 6 p.m., movies and popcorn are free. Preview activities begin at 7:30. Movie begins at dusk. Organizers suggest bringing a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.
