Update: Transformer Fire at Alcatel-Lucent Injures Two

Two members of fire brigade hospitalized with smoke inhalation.

A transformer fire in the basement of a commercial building on the property of Alcatel-Lucent injured two members of the Alcatel-Lucent fire brigade this morning.

Berkeley Heights fire and police departments were notified just before 7 a.m. Monday about a fire at 600 Mountain Ave. The Berkeley Heights fire department sent in a foam truck to get the situation under control.

According to Berkeley Heights fire Capt. James Hopkins, the fire at the former Bell Labs property began just after 5:30 a.m. The Alcatel-Lucent fire brigade attempted to handle the fire, but later called in the Berkeley Heights fire department for assistance.

One transformer was involved in building 3 of the complex, which endured significant smoke and water damage.

According to Capt. Hopkins, two members of the Alcatel-Lucent fire brigade were taken to Overlook Hospital for smoke inhalation.

The incident was reported to be under control in less than an hour.

Berkeley Heights fire chief Anthony Padovano was the incident commander.

The Chatham and New Providence fire departments also responded. The incident activated a commercial response plan which also had units from Sterling and Watchung on the scene.

Union County mutual aid was provided by Westfield, Springfield and Cranford fire departments while Berkeley Heights responded to the fire, which was effectively under control by 9:40 a.m. according to Capt. Hopkins.
