Woman Listed in Serious Condition After Mountainside Car Accident

Helena Boguniewicz, an 85-year-old Union resident, was seriously injured after driving her car off Route 22 on Sunday afternoon. The accident is still under investigation.

An 85-year-old woman is listed in serious condition after she was injured in a car accident that occurred on Route 22 in Mountainside on Sunday afternoon.

Helena Boguniewicz, of Union, was traveling eastbound on Route 22 around 3 p.m. when she drove her 1999 Silver Toyota off the highway near the exit lane of Mountain Avenue (Echo Lake Park) entrance area, Mountainside Police Captain Richard Osieja said in an email. 

The vehicle came to rest head on into a large tree, Osieja said. Boguniewicz was the sole occupant and driver of the vehicle. She had to be extricated by the Mountainside Fire Department and then flown by Medevac helicopter to University Hospital.

The helicopter responded to calls for aid and landed in an open area near Mountainside Borough Hall.

Oseija said the circumstances of the accident are still under investigation by the Mountainside Police Department's Serious Accident Investigation Team.
