Berkeley Heights Residents Will Vote on Secession in November

Township Council passes resolution to let voters address whether Berkeley Heights should secede from Union County.

An idea for Berkeley Heights to swap Union County for Morris County will be on the Nov. 5 general election ballot, according to a published report.

The Berkeley Heights Township Council passed a resolution at its Tuesday night meeting asking the County Clerk to add to the November ballot one question: whether Berkeley Heights should secede from Union County and join Morris County, NJ.com reported.

Mayor Joseph Bruno and the council have discussed the idea of secession for nearly a year, with the mayor charging that fiscal mismanagement by Union County's Board of Freeholders has led to higher taxes—a $1.2 million increase hit Berkeley Heights in May—and reduced services for residents.

Bruno said Tuesday night that the move is not motivated by politics, but instead by a desire "to make New Jersey affordable," the article continued.
