Christie Declares State of Emergency Due to Winter Storm

Parts of the state experienced heavy snowfall, while others were pounded with rain. Hazardous conditions are expected to last several days.

As the first of what may be three winter storms pounded the state on Monday, Gov. Chris Christie declared a State of Emergency.

The State of Emergency authorizes the Director of Emergency Management to activate and coordinate all preparation and response efforts with all county and municipal emergency management officials and government agencies.

Earlier in the day, all non-essential state employees were granted a staggered dismissal.

It began at noon and was called to help alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel hazards as the storm is expected to bring heavy snow and mixed precipitation throughout the state into the afternoon.

Fallen trees and power outages, and flooding along the coast and in small streams and rivers may add to the hazardous conditions.

Hazardous conditions are expected to persist for several days, with the next storm projected to arrive on Tuesday night.

Portions of the state were hit with large amounts of snowfall on Monday. Areas in the southern portion of the state that didn’t experience heavy snow were pounded with heavy rain.

“Today’s winter storm is expected to produce heavy snow and travel hazards throughout the state, affecting tonight’s evening commute,” Christie said. “I’ve authorized state officials to take all necessary action to prepare, and my Administration will continue monitoring conditions throughout the remainder of the storm. I encourage all New Jerseyans to drive carefully and remain off the roads if possible so that our first responders and public safety officials can safely respond to any emergency situations.”

It is the third time this winter Christie has declared a State of Emergency due to weather.

MB and Phil...agreed.
DD February 03, 2014 at 04:58 PM
The roads are horrible. Don't be stupid.
Linda February 03, 2014 at 05:45 PM
Gee, if all you rocket scientists think Christie should be impeached for the lane closings, then using your standard Barack Obama wouldn't have anyone working in the IRS, State Dept., Justice Dept., or the NSA! Perhaps MB and others they haven't heard there isn't any evidence that he was involved.
Ridgewood Mom February 03, 2014 at 06:28 PM
Its pretty hard to take anything that Christie says seriously these days.
John February 03, 2014 at 06:56 PM
Then don't read the article...plain and simple
Joe videodummy February 03, 2014 at 07:26 PM
What Christie should say is: Stop digging and start shoveling! The only document they found so far was the one earmarking an additional 340 million to Zimmer that wasn't due until later this month. If I was Governor, I'd blow my nose in it first. Dem's don't know how lucky they are to have a guy like Christie.
Ridgewood Mom February 03, 2014 at 07:29 PM
Got it. People who have a problem with the Governor's ways should just sit by idly as he exploits another storm to boost his carefully crafted "I am bigger then New Jersey" image. Say is he in New Jersey this time around?
BellairBerdan February 03, 2014 at 07:47 PM
Doesn't Christie leave for Disneyworld in major snowstorms?
MILITANT ANTI-THEIST February 03, 2014 at 07:57 PM
He shouldn't even be driving a snow plow let alone making decisions like this.

Some of these ignorant, stupid comments just make me laugh!
. February 03, 2014 at 08:52 PM
Just as I laugh at the ignorant stupid people that elected this lyng sack of garbage for a second term.
Phil Brooks February 03, 2014 at 10:21 PM
. , Which is a different bunch of ignorant, stupid people from those who elected the last sack of garbage for two terms, the first in a rigged election.
Statist Government February 04, 2014 at 03:22 AM
Reading these comments leads me to conclude that Americans have the Government that they deserve.
John February 04, 2014 at 07:01 AM
Those of you calling to impeach Gov. Christie must really love paying outrages property tax. Love em or hate em. This Governor had the guts to stand up and address the pension shakedown that has been let go entirely way to long. Unless your a parasite who's grabbing one then you should have no reason at all to bad mouth this man.
Clay Thomas February 04, 2014 at 08:05 AM
Like that double dipping loser Kimmy G. Christie's toadie and Lt. Gov.
Ridgewood Mom February 04, 2014 at 08:11 AM
Property taxes have gone up under Governor Christie, as a direct result of his policies and actions. http://www.politifact.com/new-jersey/statements/2013/oct/20/milly-silva/milly-silva-claims-property-taxes-have-climbed-20-/

RM, did you even read the article that you are citing?
Jo Anne February 04, 2014 at 08:47 AM
I wonder whatever happened to "Innocent until proven guilty." It's easy to see someone in a high position doing what this Bridget Kelly did. Call for impeachment or whatever after documents are produced proving guilt,,, Mob mentality is ugly,, very sad
Ridgewood Mom February 04, 2014 at 09:03 AM
Let me read it for you, Long Time Resident. "it’s clear the increase isn’t as high as 20 percent, but it doesn’t appear to be as low as 13 percent."

One of the good things about being an independent is that you get to watch both sides of the political realm go at each other. I enjoy watching the leadership of the Democratic Party essentially make fools of the supporters that follow them. But that’s ok I don’t blame you. After all you can get a free phone. As to the Republicans, they can’t organize their own party enough to make any challenge to the opposition and so the stupidity trucks on. The Democratic supporters cheer the ACA not knowing that it increased their own taxes while simultaneously allowing an increase in the use of food stamps which in turn increases their own taxes again. That’s ok; you can get a free phone! Oh, the Republicans closed a bridge, how dare them. The Democratic leadership challenges the intellectual abilities of its supporters when they say it was ok that Americans died overseas in a terrorist attack. Additionally, it is ok that we provided arms to drug cartels that are killing our own Americans because I said it was with a smile and gave you a free phone. And so Democrats believe it is truth. Just like it was the truth the Hillary was dodging grenades and bullets during her trip to Tuzla and Sarajevo. And to think you believe in this. Again, they challenge their own people’s intelligence. One of my friends who is a diehard Democrat got a flat tire about a month ago while pulling into Wawa. While inside he bought a cup of coffee for his buddy next to him who is not the brightest crayon in the box if you know what I mean. When the both of them walked outside, the buddy decided to return the kindness by changing his friends tire. The sad truth is that his buddy thought he was doing a good thing because he did change his tire and was very proud of himself. The funny truth is that the Democrat not only got his tire changed for just the price of the coffee, but he made his friend think he was one with the greater act of kindness. I laugh at this because it is exactly what the Democrats did with ACA and free phones. To the Republican supporters stop closing bridges. You also need to stop providing people with actual leadership skills and provide a member who has never ran anything. That way those 80 percent of the population who believe everything should be given to them, can relate. Remember, democratic supporters are easily manipulated with a free phone and a smile or cup of coffee.
Me February 04, 2014 at 09:21 AM
RM, And I bet you think it's worse now than it was under Corzine? Right?
BellairBerdan February 04, 2014 at 09:31 AM
I love "Independents" that only vote Republican then never have the balls to own up to anything they cause.
suz February 04, 2014 at 09:33 AM
Me...of course they do. They also think that we are better off under Obama for the past 6 years. Sad.
Andy Pat February 04, 2014 at 10:36 AM
Yes, he declared a state of emergency. But they are not plowing the streets the children of Buono voters live on! He is a Man of the (some) People. Or maybe the Declaration is to distract from the scandals.
Ridgewood Mom February 04, 2014 at 10:51 AM
Me, my property taxes are higher now then they were under Corzine. And since when do I have to like Corzine in order to dislike Christie?
Ridgewood Mom February 04, 2014 at 10:55 AM
Yes, Bellair. It makes me wonder about what the term "independent" really means to these people. And it reminds me of how odd it is that the most conformist, groupthink driven people tend to go on about others needing to exercise "personal responsibility."
BellairBerdan February 04, 2014 at 10:59 AM
My taxes were lower under Corzine. I received a property rebate that equalled nearly 1/4 of them as well and my town wasn't raising the fees of every service they could.
Ridgewood Mom February 04, 2014 at 11:12 AM
The invocation of Corzine also does a great deal to discredit the claim of being independent. Is this discussion about Christie as an individual or is it about Democrats vs. Republicans?
Macy February 04, 2014 at 11:48 AM
Christie has almost nothing to do with anyones property taxes! He can claim he does but it is the local, county and schools that ae your property taxes. Christie has diverted funds , same as past governors, both repub and dems. He has also pushed items on the local level, so he looks as though he is saving money. The only way Christie can save people's property taxes is if he finds a way to fund things like the schools in an equal manor and stops taking money om the so called wealty communites and returns very little of what they pay into these communities. Christie is just another lying politican, same as all the rest.
Rick Ricky February 04, 2014 at 11:55 PM
@Macy, It is called a Shell Game. Something all politicians like to play. Just moving money around and around as nothing changes.
