July 1 Tornado Gave BH Mayor 'Bloomberg Moment'

Joseph Bruno and the Township Council praised responders for their efforts during the storm.

Berkeley Heights Mayor Joseph Bruno said the July 1 tornado that brought 85 mph winds to the town was his "Mayor Bloomberg moment," at Tuesday's township council meeting, according to The Alternative Press.

The storm brought gusts to Mt. Carmel Field and traveled from Springfield Avenue to Snyder Avenue, toppling trees and damaging roofs and gutters. There were no reports of injuries, said Bruno, who praised the efforts of emergency responders and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Bruno said the the event is making him rethink his reticence to accept the concept of climate change, the article continued. He suggested that the town needs an emergency generator and additional stores of diesel fuel to ensure town departments can continue to function during future storms—and that obtaining one should take priority over other capital funding items.
